Modes of transport
Airports
Toulouse is the nearest sizeable airport, about 90 minutes away by car. All year round, it has daily flights to four London airports, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. In the summer season, there are also flights to several other UK destinations. And many other European destinations, of course! If you choose not to rent a car, you can transfer to Toulouse station by bus or taxi. Airlines flying to Toulouse from the UK are British Airways (Heathrow), Easyjet (Gatwick, Luton and Bristol), FlyBe (Birmingham and Manchester), Ryanair (Stansted) and Jet2 (various summer season destinations).
Carcassonne is a further option, but is slightly further, being over two hours away by car.
Rodez is the nearest airport, but as of Spring 2016 there are no flights there from the UK, Ryanair having ceased to fly there. Rodez is a pleasantly small regional airport, but has no transport infrastructure, so passengers need to be met or to rent cars.
Train
Najac has a station! Trains run 5-6 times daily on a line terminating at Toulouse to the south-west, while to the north all trains run to Figeac, and from there the train may continue to Aurillac and Clermont-Ferrand. There are plenty of connections from Toulouse all over the South-West (Carcassonne, the Pyrenees, Spain), and from Figeac to various destinations such as Rocamadour or the Dordogne.
It is possible to fly to Toulouse or Carcassonne and then take the train to Najac. You would need a bus or taxi to get from airport to station, but services are provided for that purpose. At Najac, the station is 30 minutes walk up a hill, or 5 minutes by car. We are happy to provide a lift from Najac station to our B&B for those who wish to travel by train.
The trains are smooth and comfortable, and certain services – denoted ‘Tike’mouv’ on the timetable – have very reasonable fares. Let us know if you are thinking of using the train – maybe doing a train plus backpack holiday – and we may be able to make suggestions.
Car
By car: 55 minutes from A20 Paris-Toulouse motorway. Exit the motorway at Caussade, then follow signs for Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Just after the village of Parisot, turn right and descend a hill – Parisot is to your right. Look for a turning to the left signposted Najac – follow this, and further signs to Najac. As you reach Najac, you pass through Najac-Gare and cross the river, then climb up on a road that skirts the village to the right. Follow this round – do not take any of the streets that lead toward the church and castle. Shortly after a hairpin bend to the left, you arrive at a car park opposite a road leading in to a cobbled square. We are on the square to the right – look for the Elelta shop.
If you would like help planning a specific car journey, get in touch and we will be happy to help.
Wherever you start from, when you get to Najac find the main car park by the Post Office (Poste) and Police Station (Gendarmerie), across from the Café du Faubourg. Follow the road that passes into a cobbled square. This is the Place du Faubourg – we are on the right of the square as you enter. Look for the Elelta shop with blue shutters.
